REPRESENTAÇÕES SOCIAIS DA VIOLÊNCIA SOBRE IDOSOS: IDADISMO, ESTERIÓTIPOS E DISCRIMINAÇÃO SOCIAL REPRESENTATIONS OF VIOLENCE ON ELDERLY: IDADISM, STERIOTYPES AND DISCRIMINATION

Resumo

A violência sobre os idosos resulta de um combinação de fatores individuais, contextuais e socioculturais. Objetivo: Analisar as representações sociais de um grupo de idosos sobre a violência sobre idosos e os motivos dessa violência. Métodos: Abordagem qualitativa apoiada na Teoria das Representações Sociais. Participaram de 237 idosos com idades compreendidas entre os 65-96 anos, do projeto Envelhecer em Segurança no Alentejo (Prevenção de Quedas e Violência contra Idosos) - Compreender para Agir, da Universidade de Évora. Recorreu-se à Técnica de Associação Livre de Palavras e os dados foram tratados através de um software de análise de dados qualitativos. Resultados: A violência é associada a injustiça, tristeza, falta de respeito, maldade e abandono. Os motivos da violência são a maldade, a falta de respeito, a droga, o álcool, o dinheiro e a falta de educação. Conclusão: As representações sociais destes idosos sobre a violência e os seus motivos remetem para os estereótipos associados ao idadismo prevalente na sociedade, onde a desvalorização social do idoso domina conceções e práticas quotidianas. Abstract

Violence against the elderly results from a combination of individual, contextual and sociocultural factors. Objective: To analyze the social representations of a group of elderly people about violence against the elderly and the reasons for this violence. Methods: Qualitative approach based on Social Representations Theory. A total of 237 elderly people aged 65-96 years participated in the project Ageing Safely in Alentejo (Preventing Falls and Violence against the Elderly) – Understanding for Action, at the University of Évora. The Free Speech Association technique was used and data were processed through qualitative data analysis software. Results: Violence is associated with injustice, sadness, lack of respect, malice and abandonment. The reasons of violence are evil, lack of respect, drugs, alcohol, money and lack of education. Conclusion: The social representations of these elderly people on violence and their reasons refer to the stereotypes associated with the prevalent ageism in society, where the social devaluation of the elderly dominates day-life conceptions and practices.
